Spending the day in Bali, Indonesia
With limited time to spend in Bali, we decided that a tour of the island would be a great way to sample what the island has to offer. Having gotten some advice on “must-sees” from friends who were recently in Bali, we opted for Viator’s “Bali, Kintamani Volcano, Ubud and Barong Dance Full Day Tour.” We stayed in Sanur on the water, and were picked up at our hotel. Our tour guide, Sandy, a Balinese local, was enthusiastic and with wealth of knowledge about Bali.
Understanding the Local Culture
Before getting a mile out of town, the group’s curiosity about the offerings that can be seen all over Bali got the best of us. Sandy explained that the offerings, or banten, are common ritual in Balinese Hinduism. What we were seeing were canang, the palm leaf trays filled with flowers and food offerings, meant to express thanks to the good spirits and to placate the demons to prevent them from disturbing life’s harmony. These offerings are made daily and can be seen all over Bali– in temples, store fronts, homes, etc.
Our first stop was to watch Barong dancing. Sandy explained to us that theater and dancing are a central part of Balinese culture, and that Barong dancing exemplifies the unique form of Hinduism that exists in Bali. We walked into the outdoor theater and as we were taking our seats, we were showered by the traditional music being played to the side of the stage by an ensemble of nearly 20 performers. Listening to the music and waiting in the heat for the performance to begin, I almost fell into a trance. The costumes used in the performance are elaborate, colorful and fun. The Barong, the “Lord of the Forest,” is a mythical creature, half dog, half lion and his costume require two performers, one to fill the front and one the back. The story told typifies the Balinese culture, and the constant balancing act between good and evil.
Next, shopping!
Next we visited a local silver shop, followed by a stop at a wood carving shop. At both places we were able to see the masters of trade at work. Bali is known for its wood work, and there were some amazingly elaborate pieces on display and for sale. Sandy explained that some of the larger works required a full year of labor to complete– watching the artists carefully at work, I could understand why! The prevalence of Hinduism was dominate in many of the sculpted pieces and Sandy was happy to share with us the significance of the figures.
On our way to lunch near Mount Kintamani, we stopped at the rice fields outside of Ubud. I never knew so many shades of green existed! As we waited for the sun to come out from behind the clouds for the “perfect photo opp,” I took in the terraced sea of green. At this stop, more than others, we noticed that the locals were accustomed and ready for tourists– they were aggressively hopeful that we would buy their crafts. Our buffet lunch overlooking Mount Kintamani was delicious and filling. The area surrounding the volcano is lush and green, making the black blanket of cooled lava flow that stretches the side of the mountain appear all the more dramatic.
Sandy made a special stop for us at an agrotourism coffee farm. The farm included a small botanical garden and we were greeted by locals, happy to have us sample their freshly roasted coffee. It was so delicious that we made a quick stop at their store to purchase some beans to bring home.
A Place of Worship
The tour includes two stops at temples, first the Holy Springs (Gunung Kawi Temple) and the last stop of the day the Elephant Cave at Goa Gajah. At both temple entrances there were sarongs for borrow, as it is improper to enter a temple with one’s knees exposed. Sandy walked us through the holy springs, situated in lush jungle, and showed us the holy baths. Offerings abounded, and it was clear why this serene setting was chosen as a place of worship. As the name suggests, the Elephant Cave is an elaborately sculpted cave that resembles an elephant. Before the deluge of tourists, this was a place of worship where people would meditate within the Elephant Cave for hours or days.
Driving Home
Our drive back to the hotel corresponded with rush hour and the streets were crowded with motorbikes. Before the trip I’d toyed with the idea of renting a motorbike and touring around the island. On the drive home, a huge sense of relief set in when I realized what I would have been getting myself into had I attempted to weave in and out of traffic with hundreds of other riders. I was happy to be in the van with Sandy.

The frozen continent’s environmental woes
Reminiscent of the symbol of Antarctica's age of innocence's death, the cruise liner's badly gashed orange hull rose from the deep, icy waters. Upon the overturned vessels, penguins perch calmly oblivious to the danger found in the thin oily layer glistening around. Much more of the diesel fuel in gallons unbound in the shipwreck emit the substance gradually after tens of thousands of these have already been cleaned up by the natural process of evaporation.
Time quickly evolves down at Earth's final frontier. Some countries with vested interest either to stake or reinforce their claims to a part of this Frozen Continent are consistently lending their sea vessels, bulldozers, amphibious trucks and airships. With fanfare that runs through their respective nations, bases are built and research projects are launched. Every austral summer week, well heeled tourists come in hundreds aboard cruise ships, military transport planes or supply vessels as arranged by specialized agencies for travel.
Not requiring any passports, the last place on Earth is a favorite venture among people coming in private yachts and polar skiing expeditions. With accidents happening all the time, take the cruise ship that sank, the marine and wildlife around the Antarctic paid the price as a host of environmental, legal and even political questions invade endlessly like the dangerous icebergs in the barely charted seas of the Earth's final frontier. None of them owns the frozen continent as the Antarctic Treaty states so no laws apply then.
The treaty that endeavors to make countries with territorial claims forget about it for the next 30 years and enable peaceful research to thrive in Antarctica was signed by 12 countries back in 1961. The treaty is now participated by 8 more nations also receiving full voting powers while an additional 18 counties consented to abide by the laws while holding only observer role. Conferences held every two years are exclusive among the treaty nations. Now, with the group?s plan to permit strictly regulated exploitation and exploration of mineral resources, Antarctica will no longer be as mystical as many perceive it to be. However, they are now beginning to struggle with issues on marine and air safety, proliferation of hubs and bases, indemnification, medical and rescue facilities as well as other concerns.
During the austral summer season, more than 30 cruises were scheduled to call on Palmer, bringing an average 100 tourists on each occasion. Tourism can barely be tamed as it is out of control. There was a short lived attempt by the Science Foundation in the past year to inhibit tourists from coming in, believing that these impeded the research processes. As Americans who were very influential claimed their right to see how their tax dollars were spend, the ban was removed.
Taking care of the needs of other people in the station is one of the station staff, a medical corpsman manning a small room that can fit up to four dozen patients at a time. It lacks skill in managing maritime disaster. Most of the workers at the station know that to prevent a disaster, they must have fair weather. They were mostly open inflatable rafts that missed oars and motors, they shared when asked about the lifeboats found in the sunken cruise ship. It was a calm day and they could easily be pulled back to shore using small work boats. But let us just be thankful that this did not overturn or drifted far out to sea thanks to the merciless Antarctic weather for things would get harder, opine the workers.
Immediately, the National Science Foundation responded to the oil spill by dispatching navy and civilian pollution control teams wielding specialized equipment weighing 52 tons to address the problem caused by the oil spill. For the mission, over two million dollars was spent. Chile and Argentina's navy are sent in for expensive clean up missions. Even as the cleaning mission concluded at the middle of March, the sunken vessel still has up to 63,000 gallons that is impossible to be reached and pumped out without any health risks and it could spill out in a more massive manner once the ship gets torn while a winter storm rages or just go through the natural course of seeping out while the wreck disintegrates through time. It would be much too costly to tow the wreckage, according to experts.
Teeming with wildlife especially birds like skuas, cormorants, penguins, Arctic terns and other species, the area of the oil spill is at risk. Many seas and whales often go through the bay. There has been indirect evidence linking the death of many bird species as well as penguins due to poisoning from the oil spill but then as to the extent of the damage, there has been no clear answers yet. A special team of 15 researchers from the United States, Argentina and Chile has arrived to begin a comprehensive study on the spill's environmental impact. There is not a possibility for damage claims and it will also take years before it is over.
As American holds no territorial ownership to the place specifically at or surrounding Palmer Station, they are not eligible for any damage compensation and it will only be on the Antarctic Peninsula, countries such as Great Britain, Argentina and Chile that do. During the next Antarctic Treaty, Chile will propose an article that will ensure each country will be held financially liable for any damages especially to the environment. The Science Foundation presently is doing everything to organize a coordinating office for emergencies on an international level while trying to achieve an agreement among groups when it comes to costs of cleaning up spills and other unwanted occurrences.
